Bánh Xèo Tôn Đức Thắng

Ban xeo is my favorite Vietnamese dish and I can say this diner serves a delicious and an affordable one. I highly recommend this. Just so you know, there dine- in area is small. This is meters away from the Temple of Literature.

Was told that bahn xeo was better in the south but I have yet to experience it. With that said I did manage to find this quaint little bahn xeo restaurant from tiktok and really enjoyed the food here. Their prices are very affordable and food is authentic as seen from the number of locals who visit them. I’d visit them over the overpriced michellin stalls any time!

I came at 5pm, there is no customer yet, so I am the first. Ordered a pork banh xeo (24k VND) and 5 pieces of Banh Bot Loc (6k each = 30k VND). So total bill is 54k VND (2025) It is located inside an alley, but you can see the menu hanging by the street, so it is easy to find. Inside are some tiny chairs and tiny tables, inside their own house living room as well. Order is easy. Just point and go, it has English menu. Except for Banh Bot Loc translation is wrong, it is actually the prawn thingy dumpling. The food came fast, since I am only customer. Now I have high hope over Banh Xeo since I found this food and absolutely adore. But this one is off my liking. First it is very oily, and the filling are a little. Mostly are bean sprouts. and the rice paper there is not water to make it soft so I ate in hard rice paper. And the Banh Bot Loc is my first tasting, I mean it is good to pair with the fish sauce, that’s all about it. Texture wise a little sticky to my teeth. Overall this is a so so experience for me. I thought I would be blown away. But the only thing blown me away is how overrated some other reviews are. Maybe everyone have different time and experience so who do I judge. I would like to continue my Banh Xeo hunting.

The bánh xèo and nem lụi here are okay! There are seats available either on the front alley or in the backyard, but they’re quite small and cramped. I went just as they opened, and it didn’t take long for the place to fill up completely. To reach the dining area, you’ll need to walk through a narrow alley where the vendor is frying bánh xèo—an interesting sight! However, there are a few things that could be improved. The fillings in the bánh xèo were very sparse. I ordered the beef and shrimp options, but the beef pieces were small, tough, and hard to chew, which was disappointing. I also tried the pork skewers, but I personally didn’t enjoy the texture—it was like soft minced pork pressed onto a stick, lacking any real bite or flavor. On the bright side, the staff were very friendly, and watching the chef at work was a cool experience. The restaurant does have a restroom, but it’s a squat-style toilet with a manual water scoop for flushing. Strangely, there were goldfish swimming in the water tank, which I found quite bizarre. It’s worth a visit for the food, but there’s definitely room for improvement!
